What is a Solar Battery?

A solar battery is a storage unit that allows you to store the excess electricity generated by your solar panels. This stored energy can be utilised when your solar panels are not generating sufficient power, such as in the evening or on cloudy days, and will ensure you still have energy during power outages.

How Do Solar Batteries Work?

When your solar panels generate excess electricity, it is directed to the battery for storage. The stored energy can be used when your energy consumption exceeds the solar panel’s current output. This ensures a continuous and reliable power supply for your home, reducing reliance on the grid and maximising energy independence.

There are two types of systems available: AC and DC coupled. Solar batteries store energy in DC form, but to be utilised in your home, it must be converted to AC. 

With an AC-coupled system, energy is generated and converted into AC by your inverter; if it is not used, it is then transformed by a second inverter back into DC in order for your battery to store it or to be fed back to the grid. Whereas a DC-coupled system flows the energy into a charge controller, which feeds it into the battery, it is only converted to AC when needed. DC-coupled systems are more efficient as the energy is only converted once. However, AC-coupled  systems are generally less complex and, thus, cheaper to install.

Which Solar Battery Types Are There?

Several types of solar batteries are available, each with pros and cons. Here are the most common types:

Lithium-ion solar batteries

These batteries are known for their high energy density and longer lifespan. They are lightweight and commonly used in solar systems due to their efficiency and reliability.

Lead-acid solar batteries

This is a more traditional and cost-effective option. Lead-acid batteries are widely used in off-grid solar systems but have a shorter lifespan than lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries

These batteries are gaining popularity in solar applications due to their enhanced safety, stability, and long cycle life. They provide reliable performance and are generally considered a safer alternative to other lithium-ion batteries.

Nickel-cadmium batteries

While less commonly used in solar applications, nickel-cadmium batteries offer high energy density and excellent durability. They are known for their ability to withstand extreme temperatures and heavy usage.

Flow batteries

Flow batteries, also known as redox flow batteries, have the unique ability to store large amounts of energy. They offer a longer lifespan and are ideal for applications that require continuous and long-duration energy supply, making them suitable for solar systems that require sustained power output.

Each battery type has its advantages and considerations, and the choice depends on specific requirements, such as energy storage capacity, lifespan, safety, cost, and application.
